Started a few weeks back. The little one, you know, started getting really interested whenever I was out in the garden. Pointing at the shovel, wanting to grab the dirt. Typical kid stuff. So, I figured, why not? Gotta let ’em explore. Went down to the local hardware store, not the big fancy one, just the old place on the corner. Found this tiny little shovel, bright yellow handle, probably meant more for the beach but looked sturdy enough.
Getting Started
Got back home, picked a spot in the yard. Not the good part with the flowers, obviously. Found a patch near the back fence, mostly just weeds and hard soil anyway. Figured it was a safe zone. Plonked the kid down, gave ’em the shovel. Showed ’em how to kinda stab it in the dirt and lift. You know, digging.
Well, the first attempts? Hilarious. Mostly just whacking the ground. Then discovered throwing the dirt was way more fun. Over the shoulder, in their hair, everywhere but making a hole. Had dirt clods flying past my ear. Had to step back a bit.
The Mess and The Point
It was chaos. Pure, dirt-filled chaos. Mud on the cheeks, grass stains on the knees. But the kid was having a blast, squealing and laughing. Took about three days before anything resembling an actual ‘dig’ happened. Just a tiny scrape in the dirt, really. But it was progress, I guess.
Honestly, watching this whole messy process, it reminded me of something else entirely. Sounds weird, right? But it took me back to when I tried setting up that stupid home media server a few years ago. Everyone online made it sound so easy. Plug this in, run that script, boom. Yeah, right.
I spent maybe two solid weekends just trying to get the damn thing to recognise my drives. Following guides, hitting forums, nothing worked. Felt exactly like the kid whacking the dirt with the shovel – putting in effort, making a mess, but getting nowhere useful. It was frustrating as hell. Ready to throw the whole setup out the window. Just like I wanted to grab that tiny shovel and just dig the hole myself for the kid.
Eventually, I figured out the server thing. Some obscure setting buried five menus deep. Felt stupid it took so long. And the kid? They’re getting better at digging now. Still makes a mess, but there’s definitely more digging than dirt-throwing.
