Trying Out Some New Flavors on the Court

So, I found myself watching some tennis the other day, you know, just flipping through channels. Saw bits of Galan playing, then some highlights of Tiafoe. Got me thinking. My own game feels a bit stale lately, same old stuff. I thought, why not try and borrow a little something from those guys in my next hit?

Got my gear together this morning and headed down to the courts. Wasn’t too crowded, which was nice. The plan was pretty simple in my head: first, try and play solid like Galan, really focus on consistency. Then, switch it up and try some of that unpredictable stuff Tiafoe does.

Focusing on Galan’s Grind

Warmed up a bit, then started focusing on the Galan part. Just trying to get the ball back deep, over and over. Not going for crazy winners, just making the other guy (well, the wall, mostly, for this part) hit one more shot. Sounds simple, right? Man, it’s tougher than it looks. Keeping that depth and height on every single ball takes serious concentration. My arm started feeling it pretty quickly.

  • Tried to really bend my knees more.
  • Focused on watching the ball all the way onto the strings.
  • Kept telling myself: “Just get it back deep, just get it back deep.”

It felt… okay. Solid, yeah. But definitely a grind. Hit a few into the net, sailed a few long. It wasn’t pretty, but I could see the point of playing like that. Wear the opponent down.

Switching to Tiafoe’s Flair

Alright, after maybe 30-40 minutes of that, I decided it was time for a change of pace. Let’s try the Tiafoe experiment. This meant trying things I don’t normally do. Went for a couple of big, flat forehands down the line. Felt good when I connected, but woosh, a couple went way wide.

Then I tried some drop shots. Okay, this was harder than I thought. Most of them either floated too high or died right in the middle of the net. Need way more touch for that. Tried coming forward a bit more too, hitting some approach shots and imagining closing the net. Felt a bit awkward, honestly, not my usual style at all. It was definitely more exciting than the grinding part, but man, the error count shot way up.

Wrapping It Up

Spent the last part of the session just hitting normally, trying to maybe blend things a little, but mostly just getting some rhythm back. Trying to switch between those two styles, Galan’s consistency and Tiafoe’s explosiveness, it’s tough mentally. My feet felt heavy by the end.

So, what did I learn? Well, mostly that those guys on TV make it look way easier than it is. Playing super solid takes incredible discipline and fitness. Playing with flair and unpredictability takes amazing skill and confidence. For me? I think I gotta stick closer to my own game, maybe just try to add tiny bits here and there. Trying to be someone else entirely on the court just led to a lot of mishits today. Still, it was a good workout, and fun to experiment. Back to basics next time, I think.
