Well, let me tell ya ’bout this here thing called the “Baghdad table Jordan.” I ain’t no fancy city gal, but I seen a picture, and it looks somethin’ else. They say it’s like a map, ya know, like them things they got in schoolhouses. But this ain’t no paper map, mind you.
This here Baghdad table, it’s made of metal, lots and lots of it. They call it aluminum, I think. Sounds fancy, but it’s just metal, like the pots and pans I use in my kitchen, only a whole lot more of it. They say it’s got hundreds, maybe even thousands, of little pieces, all stuck together. Can you imagine that? All them little pieces, and somebody had to put ’em all together. Must’ve taken ’em a long time.
- It ain’t cheap, that’s for sure. Folks say it costs a whole heap of money, more than I ever seen in my life. Enough to buy a whole farm, maybe two! But I guess some folks got money to burn.
- They call it “contemporary,” whatever that means. Sounds like somethin’ them city folks would say. To me, it just looks like a big ol’ metal table, but I ain’t complainin’. It’s kinda pretty, in its own way. All them little pieces, they make a pattern, like a quilt, only made outta metal.
Now, they say this table is named after a city, Baghdad. That’s way over yonder, in some foreign country. I ain’t never been there, but I heard tell it’s a big place, lots of folks livin’ there. And this table, it’s supposed to look like that city, like a map of it. I don’t know how they do it, but them designers, they’re clever folks, I tell ya.
Some of these tables, they ain’t even the same shape. Some are regular, like a square or somethin’, and some are all wonky, with pieces stickin’ out here and there. They call it “irregular,” which is just a fancy way of sayin’ it ain’t straight. But that’s okay, I guess. Life ain’t always straight neither.
And get this, it takes ’em a whole month to make one of these tables! Four whole weeks! That’s a long time, ain’t it? I could plant a whole garden and harvest it in that time. But I guess makin’ somethin’ fancy like this takes a while. They gotta put all them little pieces together just right, make sure it’s strong and sturdy. You wouldn’t want it fallin’ apart, not after spendin’ all that money.
This Edra table, that’s what some call it, is more than just a table, it’s a piece of art, they say. Somethin’ to look at, somethin’ to talk about. I reckon if I had one of these in my house, I’d be showin’ it off to all the neighbors. “Look at this here table,” I’d say, “ain’t it somethin’?” And they’d all be noddin’ their heads, agreein’ with me. ‘Cause even if you don’t know nothin’ about art, you can still see that this table is special.
It’s got a plan to it, see. The top is like a city plan, they say. Like lookin’ down on a whole city from way up high. I ain’t never seen nothin’ like that, but I can imagine it. All them little buildin’s and streets, all laid out neat and tidy. And this table, it’s like a little piece of that city, right there in your livin’ room.
So, that’s the story of the Baghdad table Jordan, as best as I can tell it. It’s a fancy table, made of metal, looks like a map, and costs a whole lot of money. It ain’t somethin’ I’d ever own, but it’s somethin’ to think about, ain’t it? Makes you wonder ’bout all the things people make, and all the places they come from. And that, I reckon, is worth somethin’ in itself. Even if you ain’t got a fancy table, you can still have big dreams and wonder ’bout the world. That’s what I always say.
